Christmas Fair - a success for chosen charity The Smile Train
Leading charity The Smile Train has received a donation of £150 this week thanks to the generosity of staff and visitors at Bank Cottage Dental’s recent open day. The donation will pay for one child to have an operation that will change their life forever.
Almost 150 visitors were welcomed to the practice during Thornbury’s well-supported Christmas Food Fair. A host of fun activities were on offer including a free raffle to win a Braun Oral B electric toothbrush, a tombola with fantastic prizes all donated by the staff and children’s games – as well as mince pies and refreshments.
“We are delighted to have raised so much for The Smile Train, our chosen charity, which does wonderful work to help children with cleft lips and palates. The money we have helped raise will pay for a child to have a life-changing operation,” said Bank Cottage Dental’s practice manager, Teresa Witchell,
“The open day was brilliant fun and there was a lovely atmosphere. Lots of familiar faces popped in to support us as well as many newcomers, who were made very welcome. Even a couple who used to be patients 33 years ago before they moved away, called in!”
Donations were requested in return for the hot drinks and mince pies and Teresa hand made Christmas cards, earrings and bracelets, which were also sold for the charity.
Cleft lips and palates are a major problem in developing countries where there are millions of children suffering with the condition. These children cannot eat or speak properly and aren’t allowed to attend school or hold a job. Children with clefts face very difficult lives filled with shame and isolation, pain and heartache.
Bank Cottage Dental receptionist Angela Bushell ran her first ever marathon in Dublin on Monday, October 26 at the age of 40.
Instead of having presents, Angela, who celebrated her 40th birthday on September 23rd, asked her family and friends to donate money to her chosen charity, The Brooke, the UK’s leading overseas equine welfare charity, whose aim is to improve the lives of horses, donkeys and mules working in the poorest parts of the world.
The animal lover is a familiar face in the town and can often be seen pounding the streets with her rescue dog, George. She joined Thornbury Running Club 18 months ago and has been training for the Dublin Marathon for the last six months, clocking up an average of 40 miles per week.
Angela, who moved to Thornbury in April 2008 and joined the Castle Street dental practice a month later, has already raised £300 for the charity, which she has supported through monthly donations for a number of years.
“I am a big animal lover and always have rescue dogs. I’ve spent quite a few years abroad and travelled in Asia where I saw the state of donkeys there. It was heart breaking and really struck a chord with me,” said Angela.
“Whenever I feel tired on a long run I imagine what it must be like for those animals working for 15 hours a day, heavily laden down and in that heat. It really makes you think.”
The dentists and staff at Bank Cottage Dental sponsored Angela for the marathon, which she complete in a fantastic 4 hours 30 minutes!
Bank Cottage Dental’s principal dentist, Robin Cole-Morgan, said: “Angela is an inspiration to us all and we feel her generous actions should be applauded. She didn’t just come round with a sponsorship form but made a personal sacrifice by giving up her birthday presents to support her chosen charity. We wish her all the best on Monday.”
Anyone who like to support Angela can still make a donation by popping into or calling the practice on 01454 412 053 or emailing info@bankcottagedental.co.uk. To see where Angela’s sponsorship money will be spent visit www.thebrooke.org

Do not cut back on dental health care - it could cost you dearly
In tough financial times it is tempting to cut costs by scrimping on your dental care - but this false economy could end up costing you more in the long run. Lasting damage can result from neglecting your teeth and could leave you facing hefty dental bills to fix problems that needn’t have happened. Healthy mouths keep teeth for life: they look more attractive, have less decay, fewer fillings - and cost less to look after.
At Bank Cottage Dental we don’t believe in quick fixes. We encourage preventive techniques – helping you to understand how to maintain the health of your mouth and keep it free from tooth decay and gum disease. We understand that having a pain-free, healthy mouth and confident smile is of paramount importance to our patients. But we also understand that in the current economic climate this can pose problems, which is why we offer an easy monthly payment scheme that incorporates all your dental needs and potential costs.

Smoothies seem to be the new health drink of choice but be warned, the damage they do to teeth can far outweigh the health benefits.
Although fruit smoothies are packed full of fresh fruit and fibre - and count towards one of the all-important ‘five a day’ – they actually contain heaps of sugar, particularly the banana-based varieties.A staggering seven teaspoons of sugar can be found in many 100ml servings - that’s more than in a cola! They are also high in acid and this is where the problem lies as far as your teeth areconcerned.A large quantity of fruit is required to make even a small smoothie and because it is concentrated the acid can literally wash away tooth enamel. Advice is to limit the amount of smoothies you and your family consumes and if you can’t resist, make sure you drink them through a straw, which keeps the acid away from your teeth. You should also follow them with a small cube of cheese, which helps to bring down the acidity levels in your mouth.
